About Norma Belleza

Norma Belleza (b.1939) is known for her folk genre subjects executed in bright, cheery colors. Born in San Fernando, Pampanga, she belonged to a family of movie marquee and billboard painters. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in 1962.

Belleza's first Solo exhibition was at the Phil Art Gallery, 1963, where she was artist in residence with painter-husband Angelito "Lito" Antonio
. She stopped painting for a decade and then had a solo show of new works at Metro Gallery, 1976. She has had nine one-person shows since, such as at the Luz and ABC Gallery, among others. Her work is in the collection of the Jaycee International Art Center and the Universtiy of Sydney International House.

The most celebrated of her works are her folk genre paintings- including women vendors, potters, workers, and peasants with emphasis on her subject’s strength and appearance which showcase her forte in the composition of spaces between produce and figure and the masterful combination of strong and vivid colors. Hailed as a master colorist, Norma Belleza's works are brilliantly composed and carefully distanced that the overall effect soothes rather than hyper-activates the mind.
