: "Crossroads of Memory" | Almer Moneda

Through vibrant hues and intricate details, visual artist Almer Moneda transports viewers to Manila’s golden years with “Crossroads of Memory,” his latest mini-exhibition at Galerie Joaquin Collective. This exhibition invites viewers to journey along heritage roads, celebrating the timeless beauty and cultural significance embedded in the paths that have shaped the country’s history.

“Crossroads of Memory,” showcases the bygone charm of Manila’s heritage streets in Moneda’s distinct artistic style. Each piece presents a snapshot of a bustling city corner with merchants selling their goods, calesas crossing the cobblestone streets, and Manileños going about their day-to-day routines. Through these vignettes of streetscapes, Moneda captures the essence of these historic districts, from Binondo to Quiapo, preserving the memory of the people who once populated them.

The artist contrasts his monotone subjects against modern blocks of color, imbuing each canvas with a contemporary sensibility. Moneda breathes life once more into local history through the visual exploration of antiquated environments and how Filipinos once interacted with these physical and cultural spaces. Though these scenes evoke a sense of nostalgia, each work stands as a distinctly modern tribute — a present-day invitation to honor the Philippines’ colorful past and appreciate the rich history of the nation’s cities and heritage streets.
