About the Artist

The artist’s body of work consists of pointillism infused with ink painting, primarily using various inks from pens and markers, terming it as “fragmented art”. With excerpts from still life themes such as human figures, small creatures and mundane objects, Joshua primarily derives his works from folklore and fantasy literature, fashion and art history. His major fascination with these cultural subjects and experiences are further manifested in his florid works. “... I am fascinated with the little details or ‘fragments’ that make up the landscape of a place. This could be flora and fauna, or ever more urban and man-made elements like cityscapes,” the artist narrates.

Joshua Carlos V. Barrera (b.1999) is a self-taught visual artist hailing from Manila. With a Bachelor’s degree in Arts Management from De La Salle - College of St. Benilde, Joshua Carlos has always been fond of drawing and painting ever since he was little. His remarkably intricate style is rooted from his passionate interest in pointillism combined with cubism, nihonga and ethnic patterns. These genres involve great skill and attention to color, detail, and form – embodying parts that harmoniously become a whole. These are fields in which Joshua vastly gained patience and skill in developing his works through the years.

Barrera has kept a steadfast career as an artist, earning him notable spots in local and international group exhibitions including “Virtual Dive” (2022) by Artit & All For Blue in London, Art in the Park (2022) represented by the College of St. Benilde and Kaida Contemporary, and Copic Award (2022) in Shinagawa, Tokyo, Japan. He’s also been awarded in a number of established contests and recognitions, such as the Plaque of Recognition from De La Salle - College of St. Benilde (2020), Winner of “Karin Colors” (2022) art competition in Poland, and the Country Award and Finalist of “Sakura 100th Anniversary” (2022) art contest in Japan.
